Melted Plastic Prompts Puppy Food Recall

Nutro voluntarily recalls select puppy foods due to discovery in its production line.

Posted: October 9, 2009, 5 a.m. EDT

Nutro Products has issued a voluntary recall of select puppy foods due to the discovery of melted plastic in its production line. The company said it is highly unlikely that any pieces of plastic made it into the finished product, but is retrieving all potentially affected products anyway.

The small pieces of plastic, identified as a worker’s “bump cap,” similar to a hard hat, which inadvertently made its way into the manufacturing process, was originally found in both Nutro dry cat and dog food products. However, the company said since it immediately retrieved the affected pet food from its distributors, only three SKUs reached a small number of Petsmart and Petco stores. The three SKUs are:

Product Name UPC Size Best By Date
Product that made it to select Petsmart stores in California, Arizona, Colorado, Texas and New Mexico.
Nutro Ultra Puppy Food for Dogs 79105 51313 4.5 pounds 9/10/10
Nutro Natural Choice Chicken Meal, Rice and Oatmeal Formula Small Bites Puppy 79105 23050 5 pounds 9/10/10
Product that made it to select Petco stores in California, Nevada, Hawaii and Utah.
Nutro Ultra Puppy Food for Dogs 79105 51315 30 pounds 9/10/10

Nutro Products encourages consumers who believe they have purchased a potentially affected product to return it to the retailer for a full refund or exchange it for another Nutro product.

What about some toxins in the Nutro Natural lamb and rice puppy food. My mom's Chihuahua got severely sick after being told by the vet to put her puppy on that food. Now he is in the vet with tubes in his little body, suffering from kidney and liver damage. What is Nutro doing about that? Her puppy is just 5 mos. old today.
