Katherine Heigl is playing Santa Claus – to 25 homeless Chihuahuas and other small unwanted pets.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” star and her mother’s Jason Debus Heigl Foundation donated $25,000 to help transport the homeless dogs from Los Angeles to two New Hampshire animal rescue groups with waiting lists for small dogs.

People reports that the small dogs, who were transferred from Kinder Rescue in Los Angeles, were placed in the care of the Humane Society for Greater Nashua and Salem Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire.

“All 25 would have been euthanized if we didn’t take them,” Humane Society for Greater Nashua director Karen Bill told People. “We’re just so happy to be saving their lives.”

Check out this YouTube video for more about the dogs’ story and a look at Heigl’s involvement.
