Venezuela is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its declaration of independence from Spain. One symbol of the struggle for independence is the Mucuchi, Venezuela's national dog. Though the breed was once threatened with extinction, a foundation has been established to preserve them, BBC News reports.

A slobbering brown and white Bulldog named Meatball will serve as the official mascot for the 101st annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Meatball was crowned the Beautiful Bulldog on Monday at the annual dog pageant in downtown Des Moines, The Associated Press reports.

Shelter Dogs Benefit From Volunteer’s Photos
Maybe shelter dogs just need a Hollywood moment. Seth Casteel, a professional pet photographer, volunteers a couple of hours each week at the West Los Angeles Animal Care Center, photographing dogs who need homes. The pictures replace the mug shot-like photos taken by shelter staff when the animals arrive, The Associated Press reports.

Dog Sanctuary Moves to a New Home
A Montana sanctuary for blind, deaf and maimed animals is moving to New Hampshire. The owners of Rolling Dog Ranch in Ovando, Mont., say they will start moving horses, dogs and cats to a 120-acre ranch in Lancaster, N.H., on May 24, USA Today reports.
