Researchers at Liverpool University are appealing for owners of Newfoundlands to help prevent cruciate ligament disease in canines and, maybe, pave the way for a better understanding of the common knee injury that has interrupted the careers of sports stars. They are exploring whether genetic factors make some animals more prone to the condition, The Guardian (U.K.) reports.

Although driving while text messaging or talking on the phone is getting a lot of attention, pets can also be a common source of driver distraction. Nearly 90 percent of pet owners say they travel with their pets. And one survey from Nationwide Mutual Insurance found that eight percent of drivers admit to driving with a pet on their lap, The New York Times reports.

Dog-Loving Community Finds Lost Pup
A Connecticut couple has been reunited with their dog, days after he bolted from their campsite Saturday in Delaware. Chris and Kathie Gagne of Manchester, Conn., drove to Dover International Speedway last weekend with their two dogs to watch the NASCAR races, but they say a German Shepherd spooked their Boston Terrier, Brady, and he took off, USA Today reports.

Dog a Hero; Cats Die in Shelter Fire
A barking dog awakened its owner as deadly flames neared at a Berkeley, Calif., animal shelter early Thursday, but as many as 12 cats were not able to escape and perished in the blaze, authorities said. Firefighters arrived and found Johanna White, who lived in an apartment above the shelter, standing nearby visibly shaken and holding her pit bull-Boxer mix named Baby, reports.
