Dog rescueBuddy, a Border Collie who once was used as bait in dogfights; Kaylene, a Siberian Husky who survived being shot in the face; Ten, a Pug who nearly starved to death — these are just a few of the dogs whose stories have earned them a spot as a finalist in Purina Pro Plan’s pet rescue stories contest. Now dog lovers across the United States have a chance to help pick the winning story.

The Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue Doing More for Pets Rescue Stories Contest invites the public to view the top 10 pet rescue stories at and vote for their favorite. Nearly 100 stories were submitted, and the final 10 represent what a judging panel considered to be the most inspiring success stories.

“These 10 stories are truly inspiring and pull on the heart strings of the pet lover in all of us,” said Heather Gettys, senior brand manager for Purina Pro Plan. “We’re proud to help shine the light on these special pets and the amazing people who rescued them.”

Voting runs through Oct. 1. The contest winner will be determined by a combination of a popular vote and the judges’ score.

The rescue organization that the winning pet was adopted from will receive $5,000 in Purina Pro Plan brand pet food coupons. The rescue organization’s “ambassador” and owner featured in the winning story will receive a trip to the National Dog Show presented by Purina in Philadelphia in November.

The contest is being held as part of Purina Pro Plan’s Rally to Rescue campaign. The campaign is committed to help pet rescue organizations nationwide raise funds and awareness.

The campaign also includes the fourth annual Purina Pro Plan Rally Across America national road tour. The grassroots tour is visiting cities across the United States to promote rescue events. The goal: Reach a total of 400,000 pet adoptions by year end, building on the current total of 314,000 adoptions since the Rally to Rescue campaign’s inception in 2005.

Rescue pets are the best. Sometimes their trust can be hard to win but once you have it, you have it for life. They can always compare you to their previous awful life and you end up coming out on
