Dogs lying on grassPetco and its nonprofit organization, the Petco Foundation, have kicked off their first national pet food and cat litter drive. The drive aims to boost donations for the foundation's National Pet Food Bank program and raise awareness about the initiative.

During the National Pet Food Drive, which runs through Sunday, Nov. 14, 2010, the public may donate sealed bags and cans of cat and dog food as well as cat litter at any one of Petco’s stores across the United States.

The donated pet food will go to the local food banks and animal-welfare groups that have partnered with Petco stores under Petco and the Petco Foundation’s National Pet Food Bank program. As part of the program, all of Petco’s 1,000-plus stores collect pet food and cat litter year-round for their partner organizations. Since its launch in March, the program has provided more than 110 tons of donated pet food and litter to animals in need, Petco reported.

“Our national food bank program makes it easy for people to help keep pets well-nourished and with the families who love them in tough economic times,” said Paul Jolly, the Petco Foundation’s executive director and a Petco vice president. “During this two-week national drive, we’re asking the communities we serve to give a little extra and help us raise awareness for this important year-round program.”

In a show of support, Hill’s Science Diet has pledged to donate a bag of its pet food — up to 25,000 pounds — for every bag of Hill’s cat or dog food purchased at Petco during the drive and donated to the cause. In addition, Best Friends Animal Society is mobilizing volunteers in about 200 Petco stores to help educate consumers about the program.

I was involved in working at one of the drop off points. I'm so glad this has finally happened. I just can't imagine having to relinquish a family member.
