Shelter dogs get financial helpHomeAgain Pet Recovery Service, part of Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health, has donated a total of $50,000 in grants to five nonprofit animal shelters.

About 400 groups submitted applications to receive a one-time grant of $10,000. The five recipients are:

  • Idaho Humane Society in Boise, Idaho. The grant money will be used to support the Inmate Dog Alliance Project of Idaho where inmates train and rehabilitate dogs.

  • Friends of the Animal Shelter of Ashland, Ore. The money will help the shelter continue to accept stray and surrendered pets.

  • Friends of the Shelter Animals of Senatobia, Miss. The shelter plans to use the funds to help reduce the number of unwanted animals through an expanded spay and neuter program.

  • Montgomery County Animal Control & Adoption Service of Clarksville, Tenn. The money will help the group continue to reduce the number of abandoned and stray animals.

  • For the Love of Cats Inc. of Marco Island, Fla. The funds will go toward its Seniors 4 Seniors program, which places abandoned cats with the elderly.

"Shelters have been hit hard with a combination of rising pet surrender rates and falling contributions,” says Linda Lord, D.V.M., Ph.D., assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, who led the grant selection committee. “All of the grant applicants are genuinely in need of financial support; we selected the winners because of their compelling programs or circumstances and quality of their applications.”
