Humane Society in San Gabriel, Calif., Struggling to Stay Open
After suffering damage from recent storms, the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society is in dire need of financial support. Fannie Thompson Kessler founded the shelter in her home in 1924, after years of fighting with the city of San Gabriel over the stray dogs and cats she cared for. More than 80 years later, the shelter is still housed in Kessler’s old home and the surrounding property. The facility cares for 130 dogs and 130 cats, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Several Hundred Pounds of Pet Food Stolen From Santa Cruz, Calif., SPCA
The Santa Cruz SPCA’s pet food bank was burglarized sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning, SPCA leaders said. The shed’s door was damaged and several hundred pounds of pet food were taken, said Santa Cruz SPCA Executive Director Lisa Carter. Families in need who have pets are given free pet food in a weekly program there. The bags of food are stored in the shed next to the SPCA office, MercuryNews.com reports.
