Online Degree for Animal-Care Industries
First online Bachelor of Science Degree for those interested in animal care and advocacy.
A few years ago Andrea Ackerman was an animal-loving vet tech looking for a way to grow her career. Now the single mom is teaching a veterinary technology class at a community college, thanks to a new online bachelor’s degree in Humane Leadership from Duquesne University.
“This degree allowed me to follow a new and exciting path in the field of education,” says Ackerman, who has been a vet tech for 20 years. “It was great taking part in this program, not only because of the convenience of online classes, but also because of the engaging and knowledgeable instructors,” she says.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says employment in animal-care industries is expected to grow 21 percent through 2018 - much faster than the average for all occupations.
Duquesne University, based in Pittsburgh, offers the first online Bachelor of Science Degree in Humane Leadership in the country. The degree is intended to meet the needs of individuals working in or interested in animal care, animal control or animal advocacy, says academic adviser Kathy Rebholz. Courses include Animal Health and Behavior in a Shelter Environment, Cruelty to Animals and Interpersonal Violence, and Studies in Humane Education.
“Students enrolled in the BS in Humane Leadership program are very unique individuals,” she says. “They are kind, caring and passionate about what they do, and very dedicated to continued learning in their field.”
