The contest has expanded for 2011, and instead of being available only for students in grades three through five, students in grades three through eight are now eligible to submit poems to the APPA, highlighting what they love about their pets. The association will select one winner from each grade, and each winner will receive a $250 gift certificate and a $1,000 scholarship for his or her classroom to spend on pet-related education.

“This is a great opportunity to get and keep kids excited about pets in a fun and educational way,” APPA president Bob Vetere says.

Students can submit their essays through the website or via mail at Pets Add Life, 661 Sierra Rose Dr., Reno, NV 89511. Teachers can also incorporate the contest into their lesson plans and submit one entry on behalf of each of their classrooms. Deadline for submission is January 31, 2012, at 5 p.m. EST.
