Helen Woodward Animal Center is uniting with animal-lovers and animal welfare organizations globally in a Remember Me Thursday candle-lighting ceremony, Thursday, September 26. The candles, lit on the exact same day across the world, will honor the millions of pets who lost their lives over the past year without the benefit of a loving home.
This first annual global event will take place on the first day of Helen Woodward Animal Center’s International Animal Welfare Conference at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at 9:00am. Word of the awareness campaign has spread like wildfire in the form of celebrity social media posts and rescue facilities from New York City to Puerto Rico to Japan have joined the cause.
"Only 30% of pets in US homes come from rescue facilities,” says PR Manager Jessica Gercke. "Millions of beautiful, healthy orphan pets die every year without the benefit of a loving home. These pets can be purebred, well-behaved, loving animals but they don’t get a second chance because there is so little awareness of the types of animals available at local rescue facilities.”
Helen Woodward Animal Center President and CEO Mike Arms hoped that an international day of remembrance for the lost lives of orphan pets might make an impact. In only weeks, endorsement of the program has arrived in the form of over one hundred scheduled candle-lighting ceremonies; high-profile celebrity social media postings; Remember Me Thursday logo-bedecked racecars; and loan to the rights of a song from Tony and Emmy Award Winning singer and actress, Kristin Chenoweth, that will be used in a Remember Me Thursday video sharable.
"I never concern myself with whether a program starts small,” says Arms. "The message needs to be heard and drops of water on a stone eventually leave their mark.” Somehow, however, the "drops” on this particular stone quickly morphed into a river of noteworthy assistance and prominent support. "I guess the world is ready for a change,” he states. "It’s overwhelming and inspiring.
