Show of the Year – Houston Kennel Club is held in the spacious, air-conditioned Reliant Center. Special and educational events abound, including an art contest for children and clinics on dog grooming and health.

Best Professional Handler – Aware of the individuality of her dogs, Valerie Nunes Atkinson seems to connect with each one uniquely to bring out their best performance as a team. Her presentation seems effortless, allowing you to see the dog’s best qualities. She has a great attitude in and out of the ring.

Judge of the Year – Completely in charge of his ring, Edd Bivin is always respectful and enthusiastic. He expects a competent performance from his exhibitors and delivers the same to them in return. A lifelong student of dogs, Edd loves to share his accumulated knowledge.

Best Owner-Handler – Always a gentleman, Leon Goetz handles his Australian Shepherds at a level that makes him competitive with the top handlers. Leon has owner-handled three No. 1 Australian Shepherds and won three national specialties.

Outstanding Breeder – Elaine Paquette, Quiche Bouviers des Flandres. Since its founding in 1975, the Quiche Bouvier des Flandres kennel has been known for excellence in consistent type and quality. Quiche has produced more than 100 champions, and earned eight national specialty wins and well over 200 Best in Shows in both the U.S. and Canada.

Industry achievement awards were presented to:

Trainer of the Year -- For 25 years Mathilde de Cagny has been one of Hollywood’s top dog trainers, and today she discovers new dog stars for TV and movies by searching online rescue sites such as Petfinder.com, and then working her magic to train adopted animals to do amazing tricks and performances. Most recently de Cagny trained the new Baxter, for the movie Anchorman 2, and also trained the original Baxter, plus TV dog stars including the Jack Russell Terrier who played Eddie on Frasier. When she isn’t working on TV or movie sets she helps people choose puppies or adoptable pets, and then trains them for successful relationships.

Rescue, Shelter Group of the Year -- Nationally, Golden Retriever rescue is a shining star in the purebred rescue world, and within that coalition are standout groups such as Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue. They have grown from a foster system to a true shelter model, and have innovative programs such as Project Home Life, where they rehab former puppy mill breeding dogs. Not only do they rescue purebred dogs, but they have been key to reforming commercial breeding operations in Pennsylvania. The world changed for dogs in Pennsylvania when then Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell, who adopted two Goldens from DVGRR, learned about the terrible conditions under which breeding dogs lived and changed laws to protect animals, especially purebred dogs.

Veterinarian of the Year -- William Draper, Jr., DVM, also known as "Dr. Will," is a well-known small animal practitioner in the Atlanta area. In 2007, Dr. Will and his team opened Georgia's first American Animal Hospital Association-accredited small animal after-hours emergency facility, Animal Emergency Center of Decatur. He was recently honored as one of Atlanta's Five Star Veterinarians. Dr. Draper has his own radio segment, "Critter Chatter," is on the board of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association, Hills’ Prescription Diet’s Global Veterinary Advisory Board, and a consultant to numerous veterinary product companies. He is the featured expert on WebMD's "Ask the Veterinarian” series. He and his team are strong advocates for rescue care, providing courtesy and discounted veterinary services to dozens of rescue organizations in the Southeast.

Groomer of the Year -- Lindsey Dicken won top honors in October 2013 at the Artero International Grooming Competition in Barcelona, Spain, the Olympics of dog styling, helping the USA Groom Team win the overall gold. Her clientele at Fetching Canine in Longwood, Fla., include breed champions who compete in top American Kennel Club shows.

Ellen Charles was presented with the Anne Rogers Clark Hall of Fame Award for 2013. The annual award goes to the individual who embodies the very best qualities of the show dog sport and who has given a lifetime of contributions to the dog fancy. Owning, breeding, and showing dogs has been a family tradition for Charles, the granddaughter of Marjorie Merriweather Post who currently serves as president of Hillwood Estate in Washington, D.C. At the 2013 Westminster show Charles co-owned two group winners, Jewel, an American Foxhound, and Honor, a Bichon Frise.

The Show Dogs annual event is sponsored by Dogs In Review magazine, which is published by I-5 Publishing LLC, owner and operator of the DogChannel.
