While two-legged fashionistas strut their stuff for the New York Fashion Week, some four-legged divas got makeovers at the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
The idea of capturing orphan pets in high-fashion photo settings stemmed from numerous reports citing an increase in adoption rates of orphan pets with great profile pictures vs. photos showing the same pets in less flattering surroundings.
"It’s amazing how often I meet people who don’t understand that a puppy purchased from a breeder is no different than a puppy adopted at a rescue facility,” explains Helen Woodward Animal Center PR Manager, Jessica Gercke . "Both dogs have the same capacity to love, learn and become amazing family pets but images of orphan animals looking unhappy, behind bars, can lead to misperceptions of what these animals are really like. A fashion photo shoot allows us to highlight the unique personality of each of these wonderful pets and show off their incredible beauty.”

Just like Top Model, these felines and canines had to beat out other potential models based on looks and charm. The pets were chosen for a variety of reasons,” Gercke explains. "Several of our fur-shion models have been with us for a long time. Lilo has some very special requirements and will require a very specific type of adopter. Brazil is an absolute love but seems to get overlooked because, visually, he is a very basic Chihuahua and gets passed up for "flashier” dogs. Hetty and Fergie were two of the most gorgeous funny-looking dogs we had (with under bites and strange hairstyles) and we wanted potential adopters to see their true beauty.”

With the generous support of local business Chowhound Photography, the Center staff hoped the BeFUR-and-AfFUR Make-Overs would have potential adopters taking a second look to see the true beauty and top-model dispositions of fashion-forward dogs and cats seeking forever homes. And they were not disappointed. Hetty, Hitch and Julius (our one fashion-cat) have already found their forever homes. The staff feels sure that rest will follow very quickly behind them.
