Investigators from the Bergen County SPCA are looking for owners of the German Shepherds they found living in a basement at the Ridgefield Park Animal Hospital, after a neighbor’s tip alerted them to concerning conditions.
According to a report by the CliffViewPilot.com, SPCA investigators found three German Shepherds running loose in the yard and 37 more dogs and puppies living in and sharing tiny crates so small that the dogs were unable to stand.
"We couldn’t even count at first,” Investigator Evan Kutzin told CliffViewPilot. "There were three back rooms that I guess you’d call exam rooms with crates. One room had eight dogs in it, another had five.
Investigators called the hospital veterinarian to open the clinic which was closed for the day. The vet claimed to have no knowledge of the boarding situation and referred authorities to the building’s owner, says a report from NorthJersey.com
The owner who worked in the animal hospital as an employee for 10 years, was delivering a dog for adoption in Cherry Hill and needed two hours to get back to the clinic. Investigators speculated that the owner made several phone calls while on his drive getting people to come pick up some of dogs, as one such individual arrived while investigators were on the scene.
According to the CliffViewPilot, the owner plans to keep five dogs and arranged homes for about a half-dozen. He agreed to sign over more than two dozen dogs to the SPCA. The dogs were taken to the Bergen County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center in Teterboro to find their forever homes.
The dogs should be available for adoption in the next few weeks.
The Animal Cruelty Task Force at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s office will be investigating and could file charges against the vets at the animal hospital..
