The James family spent months searching for "Reckless,” a terrier-pit bull mix who escaped from their backyard during superstorm Sandy in October of 2012. Reckless wore and identification tag, but months of searching turned up nothing on the missing pooch.
"We reported him missing and called the shelters periodically, just hoping they had him," father Chuck James tells the Associated Press. "We always kept our hopes up, but eventually it's time to move on."
18 months after Reckless disappeared, the family of five went to adopt a new dog a as a 10th birthday surprise for eldest daughter. But when they looked at the faces of adoptable dogs at Monmouth County SPCA James and his wife saw a familiar face looking back.
"He was a little bigger than I remembered because they had fed him well," James jokes. "But then he was laying on my wife's feet, and I knew it was him.”
"We're all so happy to have him back," James tells the AP. "Thank God for no-kill shelters because every time they kill an animal, it's somebody's friend who might be lost. Thank God they didn't put him down because this would have been a different story."
Reckless and his family took him on a camping trip to celebrate the reunion.
