A scared Chihuahua, nicknamed "Freeway," is safe thanks to California Highway Patrol officers and will soon be finding a forever home.
On Friday, the Contra Costa CHP posted a photo to twitter showing the rescue in progress. The small Chihuahua was perched on a freeway median during rush hour traffic as an officer carefully approached with a protein bar he used to lure the dog to safety.
"This little dog needed some help off I-680 freeway today. We're glad he's safe."
CHP officer Alex Edmon tells NBCBayArea, that officers got a call about a Chihuahua running in lanes on northbound I-680. Another call reported that the dog was sitting on the center-divide wall which is where Edmon and his partner found him.
"We attempted to coax it, we could tell it was very frightened, it was shaking - we were able to pet it a little bit, but other than that we could tell it was not happy," says Edmon in an NBC report.
Unable to transport the dog on their motorcycles, the CHP officers called in Animal Control who is now caring for the frazzled, but uninjured little dog. Over the weekend Contra Costa Animal Services shared updates via Facebook showing the Chihuahua smiling and happy to be with people who care about her.
The dog is estimated to be two years old. Found without tags, there is no sign of her owners or any clues to how she ended up precariously perched in the middle of the freeway.
Many people have shown interest in adopting this dog and she is expected to have a new forever home soon after the standard three day waiting period. Because of the attention the story received, Contra Costa Animal Services will be holding a raffle for eligible applicants. While only one person will be able to take this little dog home, there are several other wonderful dogs available for adoption.
