Dog RetirementIn a nation where an aging human population is growing at an alarming rate, so does the aging dog population. This poses a particular problem: if an elderly person is suddenly no longer able to care for their dog due to their own health conditions, what is the most humane option for their pet? Well, it turns out Japan’s Aeon Group might have the solution: a retirement home for dogs.

This announcement could not have come at a better time. In a law passed last year by the Japanese government, pet owners are required to look after their pets until death. This law is intended to protect the living conditions for the nations animals, but situations arise when an owner can no longer fulfill their duty.

While staying at the facility will be just outside Tokyo, dogs will have access to a nearby 24-hour veterinary clinic as well as special playgrounds and swimming pools.

The Aeon Group is commonly known for its luxury pet hotel at Tokyo’s Narita Airport. Some of the amenities popular at the hotel will be offered at the retirement home, as well, including hourly room temperature check and webcams for owners to check in on

In an interview with NBC News, Chiyo Sakurai, who is responsible for the new retirement home set to open later this month, said "Humans and dogs are both aging and there are owners who are in the care of nursing homes themselves.”

When it opens, the retirement home will only be able to accommodate 20 animals,  and will likely average $1,000 per month. The company plans to expand quickly. "We also have many customers in other parts of Japan and we have plans to establish hubs as we feel there is a great need for them,” Sakurai says.
