My friend’s dog once ate four raw chicken breasts that were supposed to be for dinner. She took him to the vet, who removed them. They came out whole and he teased her that he could just rinse them off and she could still make dinner. We're guessing these owners won't be wearing the socks again.
The DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital submitted an x-ray of a Great Dane who ate 43½ socks to Veterinary Practice News's annual They Ate WHAT? contest. The contest requests vets to send in radiographs of strange things animals have eaten. Well this one was certainly strange and out of all the entries, the sock eater came out on top.
The 3-year-old male, Great Dane, was brought in when his owners noticed he was ill. The x-rays showed the dog had a distended stomach filled with lots of foreign material. Foreign material which equates roughly to a department store worth of socks.
The vet conducted exploratory surgery and removed all the socks. If the family has ever been faced with the age old mystery of the "lost sock," we can be pretty sure we know where they've gone. Although to be fair, it looks like he ate a few pairs as well.
The Great Dane had made a meal of socks before, but his pet parents had no idea how much he liked them until he got sick and one sock after another was pulled out.
"We’re really happy that everything ended well and the dog was able to go home right away. It’s by far the most socks our vet has ever seen a dog eat,” DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital’s Shawna Harch told Veterinary Practice News.
