Last week, a white Maltese
named Gordo was caught in the middle of a high-speed police chase in Los Angeles. Spectators in person and those watching on television saw Gordo struck by a speeding white van and almost immediately phones at clinics like the City of Angels Veterinary Specialty Center were ringing off of the hook. Gordo quickly became an Internet conversation topic, sparking the hashtag #savethewhitedog.

His leg nearly severed by the accident, Gordo was expected to lose the limb in order to save his life. With the aid of his widespread media and Internet presence, Gordo grew significant online donations for his care from concerned pet owners nationwide, who provided more than enough for his medical bills.
For the past week, Gordo had been a patient at Access Specialty Animal Hospital at City of Angels in Culver City, CA, under the watch of Dr. Kim Carey. Even Carey herself was surprised by the ability to save the dog’s leg. "The more we looked at it in surgery and on the x-rays, the more astonished I was by it. It was this very clean slice that had it gone a little bit further it would have severed his leg completely,” she said in an interview with CBS.
Almost miraculously, as of yesterday, Gordo was cleared for release to home with his owner and expected to make a full recovery. The driver of the van plead guilty to charges of fleeing a peace officer’s vehicle, driving recklessly, driving a vehicle without consent, as well as e count of hit-and-run resulting in property damage. He was sentenced to two years in prison.
