Animal Art Show Opens at LSU Vet School

Paintings and sculptures featuring dogs and other animals will raise money for the school’s special programs.

Margaret Rice won the People's Choice Award at last year's exhibition for "Delta," an oil painting of a Dalmatian.

The Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine will hold its annual International Animals Art Exhibition starting this Saturday, March 29. The show, now in its 21st year, will feature 76 art pieces, according to Christine Mitchell, director of the Baton Rouge veterinary school’s library, where the exhibition will show.

“Two hundred and two artists from 47 states, Canada, and Sweden submitted 446 entries for the show,” says Mitchell, in an interview with the Louisiana Advocate. “It’s so much fun to see what the artists send us. They have so many interesting ideas.”

All the artwork, which includes paintings, photographs, and sculptures, will be for sale. “That’s one of the requirements for this show,” says Ginger Guttner, the veterinary school’s public relations coordinator. “Everything must be for sale. Prices usually range from $90 to thousands. The pieces have never sold out, but quite a few have sold.”

One entry will win the $1,000 Best of Show Award, and one will be chosen to appear on the cover of the “Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.” Additional awards include the Judge’s Award, People’s Choice Award, and School of Veterinary Medicine Award.

The show, which runs until April 27, can be viewed online after Saturday http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu/art_show.htm. Twenty percent of each sale will go to the veterinary school’s special programs, including the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana.
