Bill Cosby Gives College a Dog Mascot

Carnegie Mellon University received its first live mascot, a Scottish Terrier, from the comedian.

Bill Cosby has given Carnegie Mellon University its first live mascot — a Scottish Terrier, the university announced this week.

Cosby said in a statement that he was inspired to present Carnegie Mellon with a live mascot after delivering the university’s commencement address last year. Cosby hopes the dog will encourage students to take time away from studying to build friendships and have fun. “The dog raises one’s self-esteem,” he says.

The Scottie, from a Canadian breeder, will make its first public appearance in the fall, and will live with Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Larry Cartwright, who owns a Scottish Terrier named Murray.

Cosby has a long association with dogs. He is the co-owner of Dandie Dinmont Terrier Harry, who won the Terrier Group in the 2007 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
