Diamond Pet Foods is recalling some of its 40-pound bags of Nutra Nuggets Lamb Meal and Rice Formula dry dog food due to cross-contamination with melamine-tainted rice protein concentrate.
Only bags with production codes NLR0404A2SL and NLR0404B2SL with a “best before” date of Oct. 9, 2008 are being recalled.
The contaminated product was used to make other products at Diamond’s Lathrop, Calif., facility. The tainted dog food was distributed to retailers in Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada.
No other Nutra Nugget products are affected, Diamond said. As of May 24, no dog deaths have been reported.
However, any animal that might have eaten this product should be monitored carefully. If he shows any signs of renal failure, i.e. excess water drinking or urination, lethargy, loss of appetite or vomiting, he should be taken to a veterinarian immediately.
Anyone who purchased the recalled product can return it to the store of purchase for a full refund, Diamond said.
The company has also set up an information hotline for pet owners: (866) 214-6945. It is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central Daylight Time.
