Federal Anti-Dog Fighting Bill Signed

Signed on May 3rd, a new anti-dog fighting law makes it a felony to transport dogs and other animals across state lines for fighting purposes.

President Bush has signed into law federal legislation that makes it a felony to transport dogs, birds, and other animals across state lines for the purpose of fighting.

The new Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act, which the President signed May 3, took effect immediately. Violators could face three years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000.

The bill was approved by the House of Representatives by a 368-39 vote on March 26 and was unanimously passed by the Senate on April 10.

Taking animals across state lines for fighting purposes was previously a misdemeanor, but was upgraded partially due to lobbying by animal rights groups, who argued that misdemeanor charges did little to discourage the culprits.

Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 U.S. states and cockfighting is illegal everywhere in the U.S. except Louisiana.

Okayy so its not just Louisiana that has dogs fights just because Michael Vick did it, doesn't mean we all do it. I wish I would see some real men dog fighting around my hood, they wouldn't be standing any longer. With out thinking I would lay them down where they stand. No threats, just promises. Thats like saying we are all crazy in Louisiana because of Brittany Spears is from here, no paperazi drove her crazy thank you!!!
so Katie, Suwanee, GA. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!!
and yes i am a girl but that doesn't mean i will be scared to pull the trigger on any one who deserves it, wont blink twice!

I believe that this is just another way for the humaniacs to confiscate innocent peoples property. Next thing you know you will need a permit just to go on vacation with your dog.

i think this new law is a very important step in the correct direction for the rights of animals.NO animal diserves cruel treatment and hardship for being born in a messed up world with even worse people. if only IMPRISONMENT,longterm would be considered.

I love president Bush! I think animal fighting is bad for both the animal and the people. Louisisiana needs to get their act together and out law it.
