After a six-month hiatus, Hong Kong's serial dog killer struck again in late October, killing three dogs in two days, reported the Wall Street Journal.
Nicknamed the Bowen Road dog slayer after the walking trail in an affluent neighborhood where he poisons his victims, the killer has eluded the law for more than a decade.
His bait is cooked chicken laced with purple crystals of Carbofuran, an insecticide that is commonly sold in local florist shops and can kill an average-sized dog in less than an hour, the paper reported. He has killed at least 38 dogs and has caused more than 60 to fall seriously ill. The case was recently assigned to the police department's high-profile regional crime unit, which usually handles homicides and organized crime, reported the Wall Street Journal.
The police have their work cut out for them. Only one person has come forward with a description of the killer, and that was 10 years ago. The perpetrator was described as a Chinese man that speaks English and has an "extraordinarily round face," the paper reported.
Dog owners in the area have had enough, and 60 have banded together with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to form The Happy Valley Dog Guardians and Dog Lovers Community to help track down the perpetrator.
For me, this is some serious stuff, Cristina Rodenbeck, one of the founders of the organization told the Wall Street Journal. Its the same as trying to kill a human being.
