Morris Animal Foundation to Fund $4 Million in Animal Health Studies

Dog Studies Receive Largest Portion of Funds.

Morris Animal Foundation, a private funding source for companion animal and wildlife health studies, has committed $4 million to animal health studies in 2006.

Health studies for dogs will receive 38 percent of the funding, followed by wildlife and the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (37 percent), horses (14 percent), cats (10 percent) and llamas/alpacas (2 percent).

Fifty-seven companion animal studies, including dogs, cats, horses and llamas/alpacas, will received a total of $2.5 million in funding.

New diagnostic techniques and better treatments for cancer is one of Morris Animal Foundations top priorities in canine research since it is the number one natural cause of death in dogs, according to the foundation. Additional study topics for dogs include blood disorders, epilepsy, eye disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, heart diseases, hip dysplasia, infectious diseases, pain management and urinary diseases.
