Scientists say Dr. Hwang Woo Suk, a veterinary medical researcher at Seoul National University who claims to have created the worlds first cloned dog, has faked some of his work, reports the New York Times.
Troubles for the South Korean scientist began when the co-author of a study published in the June 2005 issue of the journal Science asked to have his name removed from the paper. The co-author told the Times he had substantial doubts about the papers accuracy. Dr. Hwangs work had also come under fire from young Korean scientists, who posted criticisms of his work on the Web, Times reports.
A scientific committee looking into possible misconduct with the June 2005 Science article will include Dr. Hwangs article on dog cloning published in the August 2005 issue of Nature in its inquiry, the New York Times reports.
The article offers very little data that the dog in question was an actual clone and not an identical twin created by embryo splitting, scientist told the Times.
