Come Jan. 1, 2006, new Viennese dog owners must obtain liability insurance for their pets under a new law adopted by the Austrian capital city, the Associated Press reports.
The law applies to every puppy born in 2006 and later. It requires dog owners to carry a minimum policy coverage of euro 725,000 (US $864,000) to pay for legal, hospital or other costs that may arise from damage caused by the dog.
Fines for those who do not obtain insurance can be as high as euro 3,500 (U.S. $4,000).
