Semi-Cageless Animal Shelter Opens in Missouri

The no-kill facility located near Kansas City celebrated its grand opening on Saturday.

After going without a facility to call its own since it was founded in 1996, the HELP Humane Society, located just outside Kansas City, finally has a home. The shelter held a grand opening ceremony on Saturday, March 25 at its new location, 511 Main St. in Belton, Mo.

Until recently, HELP Humane Societys volunteers rescued, vetted and adopted out hundreds of homeless animals without the use of a facility. It had developed a program where it fostered the animals in the homes of staff members and volunteers until suitable permanent homes could be found.

Now, HELP Humane Society has a modern shelter where the City of Belton brings in homeless animals, which live at the shelter until homes are found.

Many of the dogs in the Humane Societys care sleep on Kuranda dog beds, but the Society says it doesn't have enough for all dogs, and is looking for donations. Anyone willing to donate a bed at a special wholesale price so another dog will have a warm place to relax and sleep can visit the Kuranda Dog Bed website for more information.

Also, the shelter currently has five staff members and about 65 volunteers, but is always looking for more members of its team. The only experience necessary is a love for animals.

The facility is open from 1 to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. For more information, visit the HELP Human Society website.
