On the Road: William Wegman

A two-year tour of the artists best work launches this month in New York.

Maureen Kochan

WeganologyWilliam Wegman, the popular artist whose tongue-in-cheek photos have transformed his beloved Weimaraners into elephants, nuns, and mathematicians, wants you to get Funney/Strange.

That's the name of a new retrospective of the artists work, which debuts this month at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. The retrospective will tour the country over the next two years, with stops already announced at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach, Fla., and the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass.

Fans who can't visit one of the tours stops can purchase the exhibition catalog from Wegmans website. At over 250 pages, its the first retrospective volume to focus on Wegmans entire three-decade career. You'll meet Man Ray, Wegmans first Weimaraner and the dog that became a central figure in the artists early career. A female, named Fay Ray, came to Wegman in 1986. Her descendents including a female named Penny, born in 2004 still strike a pose for their prolific master.
