New Indiana Dog Park to Open in July

A park in the city of Lafayette has been in the works for almost two and a half years.

After more than two years of planning and fundraising, an Indiana dog park association has finally secured the money it needs to open a dog park in July.

The Dog Park Association of Greater Lafayette, which has been working since January 2004 to bring a play park for dogs to Lafayette, Ind., announced it has finally raised enough money to open such a park in Lafayettes Shamrock Park on July 1.

The Dog Park Association has raised about $27,000, which allows the park to open, but another $15,000 is needed to add amenities and irrigation for the first phase of the park.

Because of this, the park will only be available to paid members.

Annual memberships are $100 and include up to three dogs. Each additional dog after the third will be $20. Membership begins on the parks opening date, July 1, and lasts for the next 12 months. To be eligible for membership, owners must show proof of a rabies vaccination and an annual fecal exam for each dog. Dogs also must play well with other dogs.

The association began with 400 available memberships and as of April 11 had about 220 remaining.

For more information, visit the Dog Park Association of Greater Lafayette website.
