Pet Food Scare in USA Had a Precursor
The outbreak of contamination in pet foods that killed hundreds and perhaps thousands of cats and dogs last year in the USA wasn't the first such incident, veterinary pathologists have determined. An outbreak in 2004 that also involved pet foods contaminated with industrial chemicals sickened more than 6,000 dogs and a smaller number of cats across Asia, USA Today reports.

Train Conductor Saves Stranded Dog
A train conductor in western Utah is commended for rescuing a dog who had chewed off part of her left front leg. The conductor caught a glimpse of the dog limping, and later returned to the location of the sighting to rescue the stranded mixed breed, the Associated Press reports.

NIU Wants Comfort Dogs Back
In the aftermath of the Feb. 14 shooting, comfort came to the shaken NIU campus from a pack of four-legged therapists whose mission was to find people who wanted to pet them. The weeklong presence of these comfort dogs has been so missed at NIU that campus officials are working to bring them back on the first anniversary of the shooting, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Woman Arrested After Barking, Growling at Police Dog
A 50-year-old woman has been arrested for investigation of taunting a police dog and disorderly conduct. The woman barked and growled at a 2-year-old German Shepherd Dog named Halen inside the car, which upset the dog who tried to jump through the cage, the Associated Press reports.
