Santa Cruz Dog Owners Hold Off-Leash Rally
For 15 years, the city of Santa Cruz, Calif., had allowed dogs to be off-leash before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m., but returned management of the park to the state in November. After giving dog owners four months to comply with its ruling to keep dogs leashed, a politically connected group of dog lovers that boasts 3,000 members organized a protest, encouraging the crowd to set free their dogs, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reports.

Dozens of Dead Pets Found in Foreclosed New Jersey Home
A South Jersey couple are under arrest and charged in the deaths of dozens of house pets found yesterday at the Jersey Shore. Matthew R. and Amanda Teymant of Barnegat are the owners of a townhouse where police found the skeletal remains of 64 animals yesterday, the Philadelphia (Pa.) Inquirer reports.

Volunteers Send Dogs Packing, Save Their Lives
It's undisputed that Jean Durbin's role as a volunteer at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter has saved the lives of more than a few lucky dogs. She organizes and coordinates transportation of dogs from the North Coast facility to various dog rescue groups in a loop ranging east to Redding, south of Sacramento, west to the Bay Area and back, the (Eureka, Calif.)
