Dogfessions: Dog Lovers Exposed

New book reveals anonymous dog owners’ deepest, darkest secrets.

Posted: June 11, 2008, 5 a.m. EDT

The postcards appeared out of the blue, plastered all around Madison Square Garden during the 2007 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Building off the phenomenal success of PostSecret, the cards invited dog owners to anonymously spill their dog-related secrets on them, decorate them, and mail them in. The postcards then appeared on Dogfessions.com. Thanks to word of mouth, online links, and dedicated Dogfessions street teams, dog owners around the country began sending in postcards to the website.

Now more than 200 of the submitted postcards appear in “DOGFESSIONS: Secret Confessions from Dogs,” compiled by Nikki Moustaki, the experiment’s founder.

In the book’s introduction, Moustaki writes: “This project is a part of my heart and soul. I absolutely love it, nearly as much as I love dogs. When I go to my mailbox each afternoon, I’m buzzing with anticipation, hoping there’s an envelope addressed to Dogfessions in my box. I open each envelope carefully, a smile on my face, waiting to see what funny, weird, heartwarming, and sometimes heartbreaking confessions have arrived from dog lovers. I’m never disappointed.”

Confessions range from the matter-of-fact: “I lied. I wasn’t sick today. I took the dogs to the beach,” to the silly: “I’m pretty sure in a past life my dog was William Shakespeare,” and everything in between: “I have cancelled dates to watch my puppy sleep.”

“DOGFESSIONS” is on sale now.
