Homeless Dogs Move to Macy’s Display Windows for Holidays

The San Francisco SPCA showcases adoptable dogs and cats for holiday shoppers.

In an effort to promote animal adoptions through the holidays, staff members, and volunteers with the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will spruce up Macy’s holiday shopping windows with dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens who need permanent homes.

The 21st Annual Holiday Windows Adoption Outreach event will feature several 5-foot decorated “snow globes” that will house the adoptable animals. Visions of San Francisco landmarks, including the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, will surround the globes along with traditional holiday decorations.

The windows and globes will be temperature-controlled environments and pets will have cozy locations to nap, San Francisco SPCA officials said.

Last year’s display resulted in 200 dog and cat adoptions as well as $25,000 in donations.

Every doggie – and cat – in the window will be vaccinated, altered, microchipped, and screened for behavioral and medical issues. Each pet will come with a 30-day medical assistance plan, a gift collar, an ID tag, a new leash or carrier, and an adoption kit with coupons and information on raising a new pet.

The scene hits the Macy’s San Francisco store at Union Square on Nov. 16, 2007, where former San Francisco 49er quarterback Steve Young will be on-site for the unveiling. The display will run through Jan. 1, 2008.

San Francisco SPCA officials will set up a webcam and air live footage the pets in the window on its website www.sfspca.org
