New Memoir About ‘Gift From God’ Dog

“I Have Heard You Calling in the Night” is a true story about love, addiction, religion, and a Doberman.

Thomas Healy was a man with a temper and a drinking problem. He didn’t have much else. Then one day he met a Doberman puppy who bit his hand and wouldn’t let go. After that, Healy became a man with a dog.

“I Have Heard You Calling in the Night” is Healy’s memoir, the story of one dog’s influence over his master. Before buying that tenacious Doberman puppy, Healy lived his life in Glasgow recklessly: “I would have been dead long ago had I continued to live the way I had before he came. I think someone would have murdered me, given how I drank and the dives that I drank in and that I was an aggressive, angry man.”

Healy named his puppy Martin, and suddenly the man with no friends found himself bonded for life. The pair were inseparable; Healy refused to vacation without Martin and even went so far as to bring him to church. For his dog’s sake, Healy tried to curtail his dangerous habits. But even when Healy slid back into drinking, Martin remained faithful, protecting his master’s body when he would lapse into unconsciousness.

“I Have Heard You Calling in the Night” is the true account of a rough man living a rough life, loving a dog he knows he does not deserve, and its blunt language makes it that much more moving.

“I Have Heard You Calling in the Night” is on sale now.

Beautiful story and sad at the same time. Shows us how dogs are our little guardian angels.
