I got a male poodle in Sept. At the beginning of Jan., I got him a friend. They play well together. We go to the dog park in Raleigh. Our neighbor had greenways. I need to lose weight so we walk at least 3 or 4 times a day. I also take them shopping in the winter time when I can put the windows down. When it warms up, I put them in doggy day camp while i shop and they love playing with the other dogs. Since I am retired as soon as it warms up a little, I am going to start having play days for people who work and have to leave their dogs. It will be good for their dogs and well as mine. I am not going to charge them. I love all the dogs in the neighorhood. Just as I love the children.

Great tips! I take my dog to the park or on a long walk every day weather permitting. I also take her on my errands. She loves riding in the car & doesn't mind me running into the store, etc. People can always find ways to include the dog. Hope your neighbor will see these tips & try some. Slip a copy in his mailbox! Ha!

I was able to adopt a retired show champ and brood bitch last mo. who has become the light of my life. I'm training her to be my Service Dog, and besides basic obedience, she's learning how to live in the city - & learning rapidly. She has a bad itching prob b/c of going from the country (& a kennel outdoors) to an apartment, so when she starts scratching, I take the wire brush to the itchy spot. She likes that so much, she now comes to me when I'm consumed with the computer and asks to be scratched with the brush

Very useful article - I am happy to report that I do all of those things. I work full-time and have two canine best friends but my time right after work is theirs! Thanks for the info.

I owe a home, have my own business and several dogs so I know how hard it can be to find the time but my dogs are in the house with me. They enjoy just being with me.

I think your 5 tips on incorporating your dog into your life are great. I always try and do these. I even went to part time work so I'm only gone 4 hrs. a day. We do everythingelse together, even feed the chickens and get the mail. thanks for the tips.

I think these are all great ideas for the four legged family member. Dogs are just like children. The more you interact with them, the better the dog. Just like children, the earlier you start with them the better behave they will be.

I found my Golden Retriever,Jack,at a local shelter. He is my best friend and I love taking him along with me to ball games and out door birthday parties. I ride a handicap scooter on the walking track and MOST of the time he walks beside me. Sometime he rides with me! He also sleeps in my bedroom and sits in the swing with me. I love him very much.

This is a good article. I like spending time with my favorite companion Acey, husky mix. I love brushing her a lot, hugging her and talking to her. I hate leaving her alone. when I go to Virginia to visit my grandchildren, I hate leaving her alone all night.she's my girl and I love her so much. I live alone, so when I go to work she is alone. I try to make up for it.

Dogs are so dependent on us for everything -- food, shelter, health care. We may not neglect their physical needs, but they need emotional and mental stimulation as well. I have 3 dogs, and though I work full time and am the sole caretaker of everything, I find time for hikes, cuddling, and training. My big lab loves going snowshoeing or swimming with me, my two beagle mixes have fun hiking. And we all enjoy heading to the dog park or snuggling on the couch with a good movie. If you can't find the time for your pet, you need to figure something out --doggie day care, a dog walker, or even a new home.

Great ideas! Additional multi-tasking - Play fetch while vacuuming or getting ready for work, practice stays while eating, tug of war/teach a trick while blow drying your hair.....the list goes on.
