I am very interested in becoming an Animal Control Officer. I'm 22 but I have no idea where to start. I was going to take some criminal justice courses to get a knowledge of the laws. I was told that to become an ACO I would need a referal or reference from a cop. I don't know if thats true. If someone could help me out that would be great!

If you are interested in becoming an animal control officer(ACO), go and talk with your local police agency. Most ACO's have to carry a gun in the western states and have to know local laws/ordinances.

Depending on what your jurisdiction allows its officers to do, you may want to take Criminal Justice, Psychology, and Veterinary courses. English, and Business are also good courses, as they come in handy while writing reports and if you want to advance to management. Also check out the National Animal Control Association for its 2 level training course.

I'm only 16, but already know that I want to work with animals and help them for my future career. I think that I want to get into doing something like this, and want to make it more clear to people and animals should be treated as well as you would treat your own children

why are you worried about misspelled words? that's not what is important here, I love the article. I love animals and would love to be an animal control officer. I am looking more into how I can become one. I volunteer at my local animal control center and I love every minute of it. I would stay all day and night if they would let me, but for now 12hrs a day will do.

All my life I have had a passion for animals. I've always wanted to find a job with animals that suits me. If anyone has any information about how I could seriously pursue being an animal control officer please email

hopfully i can convince the Government that we need this sort of thing here in Canada to protect and to help control the brutality that some of these animals go through with some irresponsible owners and back yard breeders!

I'm going to become an Animal Control Officer. When I was 9 my family adopted a Pit Bull, he was one of the nicest dogs I've ever met. Once I became more aware of the breeds reputation and what they're commonly used for (fighting) I dedicated my time to helping animals. I can't wait to become an A.C.O. Only 4 more years.
