Paraplegic Dog Receives Wheelchair Donation

The Marvin Fund donates pet wheelchair to a paraplegic Boxer named Nico.

The Marvin Fund has donated a HandicappedPets.com wheelchair to a Boxer with stroke-induced paraplegia in his rear legs. It was the seventh donation of one of its pet wheelchairs, according to Deborah Winters, co-owner of the company.

The Marvin Fund is named for the 8-year-old handicapped black Lab of Ernest Finocchio, DVM, president of the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Its pending cart donation was publicized on Handicappedpets.com, and more than 150 requests for the donation were received, according to Winters. “We were shocked,” she says.

Twelve-year-old Boxer Nico’s physical therapist Ann Beth Chinchillo, PT, CCRP, from Mass., was chosen, and the dog took his first steps with the cart on Aug. 9, 2007.

The Marvin Fund, which offers financial aid for the care of animals whose owners are elderly, disabled or otherwise unable to afford veterinary bills, has donated two other HandicappedPets’ carts, Finocchio says.

A fourth grade teacher from Ohio was the impetus for the first donation, Winters says. The teacher and her classroom raise money for a wheelchair donation, or two, each year as part of a curriculum about caring for pets.

Can you give a drawing / diagram of the cart. I am in Philippines, I can build most anything, but need a starting point for the balance point for the hind leg wheel pivot I see on most carts pictures, not clear enough to make out the assembly. Thanks for your help

hi! i am wanda from the philippines. i am an owner of 10 dogs; 2 adults, 4 2-years olds and 4 7-month pups. i am in need of your help in finding a dog kart or wheelchair donor for my pet, Koton. At a very young age, she got pregnant and after giving birht to four pups, she had eclampsia which caused her hind legs to be imobile. it really breaks my heart to see her crawl with only her front legs and i'm in search for a kind-hearted donor since i am not able to afford to avail one and there are no pet wheelchairs available here in the Philippines.

please do contact me at +639054734860 or e-mail me at wandaforchrist@yahoo.com or jw_foryeshua@yahoo. com

i am hoping to hear from you. thank you very much and God bless!

My name is Teresa and Iam a caregiver for a 73 year old lady who has a paralized dog.Four years ago at the age of 5, her dog named Sheba, jumped off her bed and became paralized from the rib cage down. The vets could do nothing for her and wanted to put her to sleep.Gloria, her owner would not here of it and decided to keep her. Iam trying to find her a used wheelchair for her dog because she cannot afford a new one on social security that she lives on.I know that this would benefit her dog and regaurdless of Sheba's handicap, she is just as playful and full of life as a dog with 4 legs. I was wondering if you could steer me in the right direction on optaining one. Thank you. Sincerely,Teresa(caregive- r)

Marvinfund.org is well known in Rhode Island for helping pets of owners who are less fortunate or have difficulty providing for special needs of pets that -as we all know -can become very costly very quickly. As Rhode Islanders, we are proud of Marvin and his owner Dr. EJ Finnochio for the financial support they provide as well as what they give back to the community in support and events for kids, the elderly and pets as well as people who have special needs.
