Dog Adoption Marks 3 Millionth for Petsmart

A Colorado family takes home Winchester, the 3 millionth pet to be adopted from a Petsmart adoption center.

Saturday, June 23, 2007, marked a milestone for Petsmart Charities Adoption Center. The Aukamp family’s adoption of Winchester, a 2-year-old Border Collie mixed-breed dog, was the 3 millionth pet the charity has adopted out.

The milestone was marked at the Littleton, Colo., Petsmart store. The Colorado Humane Society, which helped facilitate the adoption, was presented with a $3,000 grant from Petsmart.

The pet retailer says its charity has donated more than $52 million to animal welfare agencies since 1994, and that every two minutes a pet is adopted from one of its 928 adoption centers in North America. It aims to adopt out a million more pets, reaching 4 million total, by the end of 2007.

Winchester’s new family received a lifetime supply of dog food, dog training and grooming services, and PetsHotel or Doggie Day Camp stays from Petsmart, as well as an Optimum Wellness plan for one year from Banfield, the Pet Hospital.

“Each year, three to four million shelter pets are euthanized simply because they do not have a loving home,” said Susana Della Maddalena, Petsmart Charities vice president and executive director. “It has taken us 13 years to adopt out the same number of pets. We are excited to celebrate this milestone. It’s a wonderful way to show our appreciation for the adopter and the millions of people who have already joined our adoption family.”

Congratulations to Petsmart on their excellent effort to help homeless and frightened pets find new and loving homes. Bringing them into the store was a bold and wonderful idea.
Help them save a life and have someone love you forever. Adopt.
I support their efforts.
