And you thought your dog was bad.
Jonathan Papelbon, the pitcher who helped the Boston Red Sox clinch their second World Series title in four years, says the baseball he used to strike out the Colorado Rockies’ Seth Smith in the final game of the 2007 World Series has been chewed by his Bulldog Boss, according to the Hattiesburg (Miss.) American.
“My dog ate it,” Papelbon told the newspaper. “He plays with baseballs like they are his toys. He jumped up one day on the counter and snatched it. He likes rawhide. He tore that thing to pieces. Nobody knows that. I’ll keep what’s left of it.”
But when Papelbon spoke to the New England Sports Network for a story that aired Nov. 30, he told a slightly different tale that has sports fans across the country reeling: Papelbon said he threw away what was left of the historic game-winning ball.
“It’s in the garbage in Florida somewhere,” he told NESN.
