Premier Dog Show To Descend on NYC

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show returns to Madison Square Garden Feb. 11-12.

Featuring 2,500 champion dogs from around the country, the Westminster Kennel Club 132nd Annual Dog Show returns to Madison Square Garden in New York City Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 11-12.

The champions-only show highlights 169 dog breeds and varieties, four of which are new this year – the Plott (Working Group), the Tibetan Mastiff (Working Group), the Swedish Vallhund (Herding Group), and the Beauceron (Herding Group). The dogs will compete for Best in Breed, Best in Group, and one dog out of 2,500 will rise above the rest to win the prestigious Best in Show title.

Launched in 1877, the Westminster show is the second longest continuously running sports show in the country (the Kentucky Derby is older by one year), and it’s the oldest show dedicated to the competition of purebred dogs.

Those not headed to Madison Square Garden for the show will still have the opportunity to watch the champion dogs, as the Group and Best in Show competitions will be broadcast live on cable. On Monday, the USA Network will air the show from 8 to 9 p.m. and CNBC will pick up the coverage from 9 to 11 p.m. The USA Network will continue its coverage from 8 to 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Breed competitions may be viewed on the Westminster Kennel Club’s website, which will be available two hours after judging is complete.
