Calling all Pugs – and Pug people.
Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, hails the 14th Annual Pugtacular, a celebration of all things Pug at the Contra Costa Fairgrounds in Antioch, Calif.
Highlights of the event, which is hosted by the Northern California Pug Club and raises money for the organization’s rescue and health fund, include a costume parade, contests such as the “Most Wrinkled” showdown, a raffle drawing, agility courses, and photos with “Santa Paws.”
Lisa Sheeran, president of the Northern California Pug Club, says the event draws hundreds of Pug lovers every year. “Pug people are definitely a subculture all to themselves,” Sheeran told the San Francisco Weekly. “They’re obsessive and devoted to their Pugs. They tend to lose all their other friends and hang out only with other Pug people.”
Sheeran thinks Pug lovers appreciate the breed’s Peter Pan quality. “Pugs are eternally 2 years old, so [their owners] are often people who never had kids or wanted kids, people with empty-nest syndrome, or people who just want a toddler that will never grow up.”
Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Children under 5 are free. For more information, visit www.pugtacular.com.
