Salmonella Contamination Forces Dog Treat Recall

Eight In One begins dog treat recall after lab testing found Salmonella in chicken jerky treats.

Pet food company Eight In One is recalling its Dingo Chick’n Jerky treats due to concerns that the food could be contaminated with Salmonella.

The affected products were sold at various retailers in the United States and Canada. The products subject to recall are Dingo Chick’n Jerky 3.5 oz. and 8 oz. for dogs and Dingo Kitty Chicken Jerky 1.5 oz. for cats and Dingo Ferret Chicken Jerky 1.5 oz for ferrets.

Laboratory testing has shown that some samples of these chicken jerky treats were contaminated with Salmonella. The company is recalling the products “out of an abundance of caution,” Eight In One says.

The company has received one report of salmonellosis in a dog. There are no reports of human illness.

Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they haven’t thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to the products.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Apparently well animals can be a carrier and infect other animals or humans.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella can have some or all of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including infections, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

These products are being removed from retail stores. Consumers should immediately stop feeding the treats to their pets and discard the unused portion.

Consumers can obtain information on receiving refunds by contacting the Eight In One consumer affairs department at (888) 232-9889.

I agree about avoiding pet food made in China. I lost my beloved Shih-Tzu to acute kidney failure after she ate the contaminated Iams dog food. Now we have to worry about the treats. I have a new puppy and have thrown away all of her treats and now I am making her treats myself.

I think we should stop letting China make food for
the USA, Stop trying to save money and maybe save
lives. My dog has been sick off and on for about
a year and. I started making her dog food, she was better then I started buying the dried chicken breast for dogs. She is gonna just have to eat something from a vets office I guess. I sure don't like it when she is sick.
