So Many Dog Questions

A new book finally answers the dog questions you didn’t know who to ask.

Posted: May 27, 2008, 5 a.m. EDT

Does my dog need to wear sunglasses? Do dogs get cavities? Why do dogs lift their leg when they pee? If you’ve ever pondered these questions, there’s finally a book that can answer them.

Thanks to author Justine A. Lee, DVM, now you can find out why dogs eat grass, bury bones, and sniff each other’s butts. “It’s a Dog’s Life…but It’s Your Carpet” answers 250 weird, wacky, and downright bewildering questions about man’s best buddy. Organized into 10 categories, chapters range from “Pet peculiarities” to “Training the four-legged beast” to “Here comes the lipstick.”

Here are a few condensed examples:

Question: Why don’t dogs get hairballs?
Answer: They have smoother tongues than cats, and they don’t groom themselves as much.

Question: Can dogs get poison ivy?
Answer: Yes, although their fur protects them from it pretty effectively.

Question: Why do dogs lick their testicles?
Answer: No big reveal here – they do it because they can.

Question: Are there doggy diet pills?
Answer: Yes. Slentrol, a drug manufactured by Pfizer, was approved by the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine in 2007.

Question: Do dogs cry?
Answer: Although dogs can produce tears as a means of lubrication, they cannot cry as a means of expressing emotion.

“It’s a Dog’s Life…but It’s Your Carpet: Everything you ever wanted to know about your four-legged friend” by Justine A. Lee, DVM, is on sale now.
