These days it’s not uncommon to find Amigo soaking up attention from the likes of Alec Baldwin and Felicity Huffman at glittering charity events. But life wasn’t always so sweet for the German Shepherd Dog mix.
When his owner, Frances Hayward, the Humane Society of Grand Bahama chairman, found the dog, he was a stray living near the Freeport Airport in the Bahamas. “He was an incredibly tragic, adorable little stray pup – starving and diseased, covered with mange, ticks and fleas, face etched in unbelievable misery,” Hayward says.
Hayward coaxed the dog back to health, and soon realized she had a star on her hands. “His extroverted personality, adorable looks, high intelligence as well as tremendous charisma made him the perfect poster boy for the Humane Society of Grand Bahama,” Hayward says.
Amigo’s face was soon adorning posters, advertisements, and T-shirts for the Bahamian humane organization. Now, thanks to Hayward, who also calls New York home, Amigo has taken his star power to the U.S. as the face of the Be Kind campaign, a collaboration of the HSUS and the Friends of Amigo Foundation.
Judging from the success of Be Kind’s Cause Collar, Amigo is already a genuine international star. After he made an appearance on CNN to promote the collar, which supports HSUS, more than 30,000 orders were received in one day.
