Kayla Lyman, SC 6/6/2011 5:35:18 PM I have recently purchased a chow puppy, & already have a 13 year old chow-terrier mix. However; though the information in this article is good, it does not tell me what age to start training a chow. And, since I only have chow mix, I do not know if I should start training her now; at the age of 6 weeks, or at a later age.
Thalia Tempe, AZ 5/12/2011 11:10:29 PM the article was a nice overview, but as you stated too many breaders, thinking of puppy profit, gave them a bad rep. just like people we are a product of our genics and environment. I handeled large dogs from 14yrs on, and was taught most dogs are pack animals, so the best thing to make sure you and the pup remember is "Who is the big dog" a good dam will let her pupies know when they misbehave, chewing on table leg brought the dam running to cuff the pup gently with her mussel, I have done some thing similar, I keep my strong minded dog in one place and tell them I'm the big dog, once they give me that look like, "your stopping me, really?" then praise and treat or play
Annette Aurora, CO 1/23/2011 11:58:29 AM The Chow Chow is a very good breed. I spent several months searching for the right breeder before I considered my purchase. The perfect breeder will handle the puppies, give them lots of love, cuddles, etc. This is the 3rd Chow I've owned in my life time and would never own another breed. She's raised in a daycare environment and is great with the kids. Gentle and kind but also very protective just as expected from this breed. Challenges I do have is socializing her with other dogs, she's very pickey about who she wants to be friends with and there's nothing wrong with that after all we're pickey as well as humans aren't we? Just enjoy this breed but remember you are the superior and you have to let this breed be aware of this.
