Kim Idaho Falls, ID 11/13/2010 8:22:18 AM I have been feeding my dogs a "high quality" and expensive, "vet recommended" food since they were born. They are now 4 and 5 years old and my 5-year old was just diagnosed with bladder stones. My vet has said that these can be caused by an unbalanced diet - either too acidic or too alkaline. I was really angry because I trusted this more expensive food. I now make my own dog food and not only are my dogs doing better but they love it! I do not vary the recipe too much to avoid stomach upset (which I have not seen any yet) and I stick to a recommended 1/3 protein and 2/3 vegetables and grains. The basic recipe is cooked brown rice with one or two cooked vegetables and then I add either scrambled egg, beef or chicken. Then I supplement with homemade peanut butter oatmeal treats. They are eating better than they ever have!
