This is very helpful information about the breed. However, unbeknownst to me a dog owner (w/ 2 miniature dachshunds & 1 Persian cat)...I introduced a smooth-haired Chow (3-4 mos. old) into our family. I had two teen-aged children at that time; and she fit right in w/our busy household. She was house-trained within a day. She was: aloof, intelligent, devoted, loyal, smelled nice, and safe-guarded our home for 8 1/2 years. I miss her dearly. She was diagnosed with gum cancer on December 16, 2011 and the angels took her to heaven: January 31,2012.

My 5 yr old cream chow is my 6th chow. I have had as many as 5 chows in the household at one time with few problems. My current chow Kobi lure courses, competes in agility (as did 3 of my other chows), and like 4 of my previous chows, is a certified therapy dog with TDI. Unlike the breed standard, he loves all people and especially men! Chows are very individual. Each has talents of their own, but mostly wants to do things with their person. If they are with you, they are happy. I will always have a chow in my home!

This article describes my 13 years together with my own Chow Teddie Bear perfectly. In the beginning it hurt my feelings that she didn't show me "affection" in the way my other dogs had, but as I grew to know her and understand her I discovered what your article says is true. They don't fawn all over you. Instead, she'll leave her bed, and lie close to my feet, and those are the times she is expressing her affection to me in her special Chow kind of way. I have had a long and wonderful journey with her, and she remains still at 13 years old, stubborn beyond words and so I have learned to be a very patient friend.

I now have my third chow and she is 15. She has been socialized and loves almost everyone. My first chow was raised with a cat and did fine. I love how quiet, regal, and beautiful they are. Hot, humid weather is hard on them if they are outside however.

We had a Chow/Golden mix for 12 years. She loved to play with my 3 children and got along well with other animals, a cat and another dog. We just adopted a Chow/Beagle mix and I wondering what her personality will be like
