I truly hope it is untrue! My two female Jack Russell Terriers dug up one my sister planted and each ate half the pit earlier this morning.

ACTUALLY everyone this article IS true, but ONLY in the case of the leaves, pit and bark! Which no one eats! When we eat advocado or feed to our dogs we give the flesh only and the flesh is FULL of health benefits.

This article is completely untrue. Dogs can eat avocado. I live in Hawaii and avocados are a big part of our diet and my dog enjoys avocado often. Persin is toxic on birds and other animals, not on dog

The article goes a bit to far. Research in environmental toxicology at the University of California has shown that the problem is in the leaves and the pit of the Guatemalan type of avocado. The meat and the oils have not been shown to be toxic. Our two German Shepherds love avocados, and they by choice ignore the skins and pits. They seem to know the high nutrient content of the fruit and benefit with sleek, beautiful coats and healthy condition. Yes, leaves are toxic to horses, and I don't doubt that gastrointestinal irritation may result from scavenging on "significant quantities" of branches. But our dogs eat significant quantities of fruit with no ill effects

This is COMPLETELY untrue!! I have a doberman with major food allergies and he eats a hypoallergenic dog food from a brand called "Avoderm"...The key ingredient in the blend being avocado.

I found this forum while searching to see if avocados are harmful to dogs because this morning I gave my dog (21 pound beagle) a little avocado with her pills and she quickly started acting not like herself. Very lethargic, which is not like her at all. She wouldn't move on her own but would allow me to pick her up or lay her down. Granted it's a hotter day than we've had in a while and there could be other variables but something was definitely wrong with her. I think I'll stick to safe side and go buy more Pill Pockets!

It says Avocado leaves,"Fruit", seeds, and bark of the avocado, the aforementioned fruit most likely being the meat of the avocado. I have been reading extensively on this subject, and it seems to me that there are very limited cases of animals actually having bad adverse reactions to avocados. Guacamole on the other hand, which includes many other ingredients seems to be fairly bad. Many raw feeders give their dogs avocados regularly without incident. Just my 2 cents on the matter. Perhaps err on the side of caution and avoid them, but if your dog has eaten them without ill effects, they are most likely fine IMO.

I have to say...maybe it's possible that "some" dogs react adversely to avocado or to large amounts of avocado....but myself, husband and dobie share a nice, ripe, organic avocado frequently. My girl has never vommitted, had gas, or shown any adverse reaction to eating it. My only problem is getting her to allow me to eat mine!

So many people are talking about the actual meat of the Avocado, but the article specifies something your over looking. The largest text title is misleading, but in two places is specifies the leaves, seeds and bark. No where does it say anything about the meat of the delicious Avocado. My vet, when I first got my dog, specified the same things...

I live in the Redlands, Fl on a 5 acre avocado farm... my dogs all eat avocados. Aside from the smelly gas at times it has been no problem. They have beautiful shiny coats so --- either we've been lucky or avocado is not toxic to dogs.

If avacados are bad for dogs, then why does the dog food avoderm have them in their dog food?

I found this article when I searched to make sure avocados were safe, because I gave my dog only the skin after scooping out the flesh, just to see if he would be interested. He layed down and licked and licked till those skins were shiny inside! Funny, my husband and kids won't touch avocados, but my dog loves them!

I searched a few journal databases to try and find some scientific evidence supporting the toxicity of avocado to dogs. No significant studies have been done on this topic. I did however find recommendations from studies not to give avocado to household pets as they have been proven to be toxic to other animals such as sheep, goats, horses, canaries, etc. I also found a few that said avocado was potentially positive for osteoarthritis or osteoporosis in dogs (i can't remember which
one).

I love avocados as they are a healthy source of fat for me :) However, I think the best thing to do is play it safe and keep them away from my dog- JUST IN CASE! There are plenty other foods out there that our dogs can enjoy.

It's not very widely known, but the Avocado Growers association refused to give money to the ASPCA for their "endorsement". So in retaliation (things got pretty ugly) the ASPCA perpetuates the 'persin scare'.

When I brought my gorgeous puppies home from the pet shop, they had been eating Avoderm brand dog food, and I continued them on that diet, adding fresh meat, vegetables, starches, and fruits, in small quantities for variety in both nutrients and taste. Sometimes I add 1/2 of a chopped avocado, and the dogs love it. And it has not had any bad effects on the dogs, such as I have read about. They scarf avocados, and even go after those which are on the ground under my neighbor's tree.

What about the canned dog food AVODERM which claims to have avacado in the dog food for healthy coats?

I live on an orchard fiulled with 3 varieties of avocados and both my dogs eat the ones that fall off the trres daily and have for the past 2 years since they were pups. Other than the tummy upset ayt first, they are well used to them now and have had no issues. My vet said they are good for them. WHat is up with this toxic scare? Is it maybe a long term thing? There is no way they would stop eating them other than to uproot all my trees which cover my whole yard.

Dried avocado is an ingredient that is listed in the dog food I buy, Nutro Ultra, which is a more expensive holistic dog food. So if it was bad for dogs they wouldn't put it in dog food.
