Lee Villa Rica, Georgia 10/1/2012 9:59:25 PM 2 weeks ago our 9 year old Dachsund Rufus was fit and healthy, he had never had a single health issue in his life.I came home and he wasn't himself and had an arched back as though he had a stomach issue, within 15 minutes his legs began wobbling as though he was drunk. Within an hour he was completely paralyzed in the hind legs.I can't tell anyone what it is if this ever happens to their dog except for this; if you ever see your dog exhibit these signs, contain them and try to stop any and all movement and get them to the vet NOW. Don't wait a few hours or until the morning, with every hour that passes the chances of full recovery diminishes. We began frantically reading online a out what it could be, we read that the rabies vaccine has been linked to dog paralysis....I was devastated and spent the night just holding him sobbing. When we took him to the vet the next day it was discovered that it was in fact a herniated disc pressing against his spinal chord. We were advised to go to the University of Georgia immediately for emergency surgery, which we did without hesitation. For the entire surgery including 1 week stay and treatment, we paid $2,990.00 to save his life. 2 weeks after coming home Rufus, is still not walking but very small improvements are showing each day. It may be as long as 8-9 months before he walks again, or he may never walk again at all. It's an adjustment having to express his bladder and cleaning up after him, but its a small price to pay for his 9 years of unconditional love....he deserved a chance.Remember, arched back with wobbly legs - GET TO THE VETS IMMEDIATELY.The cost and recovery is not as much or hard as you think - $3-7k IS THE COST WITH NO INSURANCE.Only save your dogs life IF YOU'RE PREPARED TO BE 100% committed to his/her recovery, your cant change your mind later.
Vikas Nashik ( India ), IN 12/6/2011 9:41:38 AM I have a male Labnow 13 yeas old. When he was 11 years old he suffered an attack of Paralysis of both the hind legs. He recovered slowly after two months and started walking. There after he had two similar attacks but managed to recover after two to three months. Now he walks with great difficulty. What is the problem with my Dog ?

Nutmeg's mom Gassaway, WV 7/7/2009 1:10:20 PM If your dog is paralyzed TIME IS IMPORTANT! If you get them to the vet fast enought sometimes it can be reversed. They only have a small window in which to do surgery if neccessary. This happened to my dachshund, Nutmeg when she was only 4, we got her to the vet and they did surgery and she can walk again!
